Lincoln Westmoreland Housing is a non-profit 501(c)(3) corporation first chartered in the District of Columbia in 1967. It was established by two United Churches of Christ. One of the churches, Lincoln Congregational Temple is located at 1701 11th Street, NW in Shaw. The other, Westmoreland Congregational Church, is located at Westmoreland Circle NW. Lincoln Congregational Temple, a predominantly black urban congregation, came together with Westmoreland Congregational Church, a predominantly white suburban congregation, 50 years ago and looked for a way to respond to the deterioration of the Shaw neighborhood and the decimated 7th Street corridor.
Since then, and for over 50 years, Lincoln Westmoreland Housing has been providing quality affordable housing in the Shaw community. It responded to a need at a time when the neighborhood was in crisis and continued to support the residential community it created.
Its mission was and remains the creation and preservation of affordable housing, thereby helping those in need and contributing to the growth and health of the community.
