Cambridge Crossing Update 05/23/23

Alberta Scott Station Plaza & The Kittie Knox Cycle Center Open at CX

Earlier this month the Cambridge Crossing team celebrated the official opening of two new community spaces at CX named after Cambridge Trailblazers, Alberta Scott Station Plaza, and the Kittie Knox Cycle Center. Both open spaces are located at the gateway to the CX neighborhood and are adjacent to the new Green Line Lechmere Station at CX. To further create community connections and a welcoming and inclusive place, these two new open spaces have been named after historical figures in Cambridge that have made a significant impact on our community and beyond.

Alberta Scott Station Plaza is the open space visitors will arrive at when entering the CX neighborhood. It is the first impression and a place that one may stop to find their way, rest their feet, enjoy community events, wait for public transportation, and just pass through on their commute from here to there. Alberta Scott was a resident of Cambridgeport and the first African American graduate of Radcliffe College. When she finished college in 1898, she was only the fourth African American to graduate from a women's college in Massachusetts. After graduating, Scott felt it was her duty as an educated African American woman in New England to share her advantages with other Black students and began teaching at various schools.

The Kittie Knox Cycle Center is a bicycle center open to the public offering a bike tune-up station, a shower, restrooms, changing rooms, and lockers. This new space is easily accessible encouraging alternative transportation and making cycling an easy option. Kittie Knox was a resident of East Cambridge, a fast and long-distance bicycle rider, and a member of the League of American Wheelmen in the early 1890s. Knox is known for being a prominent and accomplished cyclist who bravely confronted the era’s gender and racial barriers.
