Amazon Central Park Fulfillment Center Update 04/01/22

Amazon Distribution Center Green Lit for Central Park

The NYC Planning Board has controversially approved an Amazon Distribution Center for an area of unimproved land in Manhattan's Central Park. The 2-story facility is set to total 1.5 million square feet, and it will act as a crucial hub for the company's delivery operations in greater Manhattan.

The project will require a complete draining of the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Reservoir, afterwhich a flat concrete shelf will be constructed so the new structure can be built on top.

With viable development sites becoming increasingly hard to find around the city, many say that Central Park is a developer's paradise, which is heavily underutilized. Amazon says this new location is expected to save its in-house delivery fleet hundreds of thousands of dollars a year in bridge and tunnel tolls. The company also describes this as a golden egg opportunity that will allow them to expand their presence in the NYC market.

Thankfully the new facility will come at no cost to New Yorkers (or Amazon for that matter) as New York State in collaboration with the April 1st Committee has stepped in and agreed to fund the project in full.
