Joan & Edgar Booth Theatre Update 12/10/17

Boston University opens newly built Joan and Edgar Booth Theatre

Boston University (BU) has opened its’ newly built 75,000-square-foot Joan and Edgar Booth Theatre along Commonwealth Avenue in Brookline. The state-of-the-art, LEED Silver-sustainable complex features a 250-seat black-box theatre, production and costume shops, design labs, classrooms, faculty offices and a public landscaped plaza facing Commonwealth Avenue.

The new theatre has placed BU’s College of Fine Arts (CFA) performance and production students in the same location for the first time in decades, moving the university’s theatre from its’ longtime home on Huntington Avenue that it shared with the Huntington Theatre Company. BU sold the Huntington Avenue property, located at 252-264 Huntington Avenue, to QMG Huntington LLC in May 2016 for $25 million; QMG now proposes to construct a 32-story tower dubbed The Huntington on the site featuring 426 apartment residences, 7,500 square feet of retail and restaurant space and a preserved 890-seat, 35,654-square-foot theatre that would be gifted to the Huntington Theatre Company.

BU’s new theatre, located at 820 Commonwealth Avenue next to the CFA, has been constructed as part of a $50 million investment in CFA improvements which will also include a makeover of the CFA’s building at 855 Commonwealth Avenue, across from the theatre.
