CHIPS Act Could Mean More Construction for Micron Manufacturing Plant in Manassas

In 2018, Micron announced plans to invest $3 billion to expand production at its Manassas plant and to create 1,100 new jobs by 2030. That project grew the facility to roughly 620,000 sq. ft. and included $70 million in performance-based grants from the state in addition to other incentives provided by Manassas.

Micron purchased an option to buy 18 acres next to its current facility for expansion. Currently the site of community athletics fields, at any point in the next three years at an above-market cost of $14.1 million. With the anticipated passage of the CHIPS (Creating Helpful Incentives to Produce Semiconductors) Act, aimed at increasing domestic semiconductor manufacturing, that option seems likely to be exercised.

In a CNBC interview with Micron CEO Sanjay Mehrota in June, she said if the legislation passed the company would be looking for a home for a new plant.“We have not confirmed the site yet; we are evaluating multiple states across the U.S., in terms of site selection. She went on to say “we have manufacturing here in Manassas, Virginia, as well, and of course, we are looking at future large potential opportunities for manufacturing.”

In a statement after the bill passed, Micron said the incentives will allow the company to grow domestic production of memory significantly. They did not, however, reveal their intentions to perform the option at this time.
