Construction Begins for New Tower in Long Island City

As Long Island City's popularity grows as a youthful, trendy place to live and work, the neighborhood's skyline has been growing along with it. Many new projects are currently underway in this modern shifting part of town, but 27-01 Jackson Avenue is one of the latest. General contractor, Lions Group II, has just begun construction on this 338-foot tall mixed-use tower.

Right now in the build's early stages, the focus is on creating a solid base to support the heavy 27-story structure. The building will have to rely on this foundation for decades to come, so precision is key here. Two pile-driving machines and a drilling rig are on-site burying piles and digging the remaining boreholes. At the same time, concrete deliveries are arriving to pour the initial sections of the footing.

27-01 Jackson Avenue is being developed by Fetner Properties and is planned to hold 164 residential units, with some designated for affordable housing. In addition, it will contain around 10,000 square feet of retail space. Designed by SLCE Architects, the development will total approximately 205,000 square feet and contain 91 parking spaces.

The project's estimated completion date, as indicated on the construction fencing, is said to be sometime in the summer of 2022. This seems extremely unlikely, however, given the size of the project and its current state of progress. Because of the many COVID-19 related setbacks endured by most developments across the city last year, many projects have not yet updated their expected completions. Based on this, a 2023 finish date seems more likely.
