Demolition Underway Ahead of 30+ Story Tower in Midtown

At 308 West 43rd Street in Midtown Manhattan, demolition is in progress on the existing, Martin Luther King Jr. Union Building. The building has been wrapped in white tarping and will slowly be disassembled by Breeze National Inc; one of New York's most prominent demolition contractors.

The through lot in which it sits extends from 43rd to 42nd Street and is located directly across the road from Port Authority Bus Terminal. On this site, Taconic Investment Partners plans to build a two-building residential development, joined by a single-story podium. These buildings have been designed by Handel Architects.

Facing 43rd Street, the shorter structure will only be 7 stories and total around 90,000 square feet. The taller tower, facing 42nd street will rise 33 stories and contain 284,616 square feet. Combined, these buildings will contain 321 rental units.

The buildings will also have over 25,000 sqft of retail space, which will be accessible via the 42nd Street entrance. The 43rd Street entrance will be the main entry point for building tenants. In addition, the property will have over 10,000 sqft of landscaped outdoor terraces for residents. At this time, demolition is still ongoing, but construction of the new development is expected to be finished by 2024.
