East Williamsburg Residential Development Gets the Green Light
An East Williamsburg residential project, set to be known as Cooper Park Commons, has just received the final stamp of approval from the NYC Mayor's Office. The NYC Dept of Housing Preservation & Development sought a zoning text amendment, a special permit for Large Scale General Development (LSGD), disposition of city-owned property, and UDAAP Designation & Approval to facilitate the development of 556 affordable housing units, over 2,000 sqft of commercial space, and approximately 110,000 sqft of community facilities.
Developer, The Hudson Companies Inc will build upon the existing Greenpoint Hospital campus which has been left unoccupied since 1982. Two new buildings are to be constructed, and two existing structures will be redeveloped as a supplement. A homeless shelter is also included in the plans, which will be set up in one of the existing buildings.
Spending several months in the public review stage, the NYC HPD's application had to be approved by the Community Board, Borough President, City Planning Commission (CPC), and City Council before crossing the mayor's desk. During this time, the City Council also recommended modifications to the project, which ultimately had to be reviewed again by the CPC before the application could be passed along to the mayor. Now that Cooper Park Commons has the go-ahead, the general contractor can apply for building permits and get the ball rolling.
