Cooper Park Commons Update 10/12/21

East Williamsburg Residential Development Nears Approval

A proposed residential project called Cooper Park Commons in East Williamsburg, Brooklyn is just a couple steps away from receiving full approval. The NYC Dept of Housing Preservation & Development is seeking a zoning text amendment, a special permit for Large Scale General Development (LSGD), disposition of city-owned property, and UDAAP Designation & Approval to facilitate the development of 556 units of affordable housing, over 2,000 sqft of commercial space, and approximately 110,000 sqft of community facilities.

Developer, The Hudson Companies Inc would build upon the existing Greenpoint Hospital campus which has been left unoccupied since 1982. Two new buildings would be constructed, and two existing structures would be redeveloped as a supplement. A homeless shelter would also be set up in one of the existing buildings.

At this time the proposal is being reviewed by the City Council. The project has already been approved by the Community Board, Borough President, and just recently by the City Planning Commission. If the City Council seeks to recommend the project, the last step will be mayoral review before the green light is given.
