Gensler Update 07/09/24

Gensler Reveals Renderings for Michigan Avenue Reimagining

Plans for the redevelopment of the north end of Michigan have been revealed to address the problem of record high vacancy rates along the avenue and the need to revitalize the areas around Water Tower and Oak Street Beach. The proposal would bring the avenue down from seven to four lanes to increase sidewalk space and allow for more plantings, sculpture displays and various kiosks. Additional park and restaurant space would replace existing parking, including new ground floor restaurants at Water Tower with glass openings to the outdoors with additional outdoor seating space.

For inviting access to Oak Street Beach, Lakefront Park would be redesigned to include a large plaza, welcome center, and a long, wide sidewalk path to the beach, featuring more green space and vendors. Along the beach, new boardwalks, a restaurant and a retail pavilion and deck would overlook the water. The centerpiece of the new Oak Street Beach would be a large fountain designed to attract more summer tourism to the lakefront.
