Historic Mira Mar Building Acquired for $17 Million

Sarasota developer Seaward Development has acquired the historic Mira Mar building for $17 million. The acquisition comes nearly a year after Seaward backed out of a deal to acquire the building with plans to demolish the existing building because of safety concerns and replace it with a 10-story mixed-use residential/retail building.  The Sarasota Historic Preservation Board rejected Seaward’s demolition permit application amid complaints from current tenants and residents. Seaward has reached long-term lease agreements with current tenants and is comfortable with the building’s safety. The historic building in downtown Sarasota is comprised of two buildings with a bridge connecting the north side to the south side. The current building, which is not the original building on the site, was built in 1922 and has been renovated multiple times. The building has been utilized as retail, office, and apartments.
