Plan Commission Approves Massive United Center Expansion
The Chicago Plan Commission has approved the $7 billion, 55-acre redevelopment of the United Center, known as The 1901 Project. The first phase, costing $400 million and expected to be completed by 2028, will redevelop the southwest corner of the arena. It includes a 6,000-seat music hall, retail space, and a rooftop park with 5.3 acres of green space. A large plaza will connect the United Center to W Adams Street. A new mixed-use building will be built over existing docks, with commercial spaces, offices, and parking on the first two floors, topped by a rooftop park with sports courts and seating.
The final building of phase one will feature ground-floor retail, a parking garage, and a hotel lobby. Above, there will be additional parking, a rooftop park, a restaurant, and a hotel fitness center. A 130-foot hotel tower will include 233 rooms, meeting space, and a rooftop bar.
Future phases, planned between 2031 and 2040, will extend from S Seeley Avenue to S Ashland Avenue, adding more green space, rooftop parks, and possibly a new Pink Line station. The completed project will include 9,463 residential units, 1,309 hotel rooms, 660,000 square feet of office space, 670,000 square feet of retail, and 5,800 parking spaces.
