Boston has emerged as a global hub for the life science market, largely due to its world-renowned educational institutions and teaching hospitals along with its close proximity to venture capital and private equity funding. Bulfinch has seen a larger focus on lab development in recent years as more life sciences companies are drawn to Boston to join their peers in the country’s leading life science market. Due to the growing demand for lab space and the pandemic’s impact on traditional office space, opportunities for lab development and repositioning will continue to grow.
Have you seen property conversions from office to life science?
Bulfinch’s Cambridge Discovery Park development is an example of a significant repositioning. Once a post-war suburban office park in Cambridge, Bulfinch transformed the development into a state-of-the-art lab, research and development, and office campus with approximately 700,000-square-feet in four buildings plus two garages with over 1,000 parking spaces. As we move further into 2021, we will continue to see projects like this take place in the Greater Boston area. Bulfinch expects to continue to play a leading role in repositioning assets into life science and medical usage.
