Metropolitan Museum of Art Expansion Update 12/12/24

Renderings Revealed for $500M Expansion of The Met

Renderings have been unveiled for the upcoming expansion of The Metropolitan Museum of Art in Manhattan's Central Park.

Designed by Frida Escobedo Studio, with Beyer Blinder Belle serving as the architect of record, the new section will be known as the "Oscar L. Tang and H.M. Agnes Hsu-Tang Wing".

The 5-story, 126,000 square foot addition, will replace an existing, 120,000 square foot wing, and increase gallery space by nearly 50%. It will be constructed within the building's existing footprint.

The new wing will primarily house the museum's 20th- and 21st-century art collection. It will also feature 18,500 square feet of outdoor space, including an expanded rooftop garden.

The expansion will also address critical accessibility, infrastructure, and sustainability needs. Unlike the current wing, the new wing will seamlessly connect with the rest of the museum.

The project is expected to cost $500 million and will be fully funded by The Met, having reached its private donation fundraising goal of $550 million back in May of 2024. Beginning in 2025, The Met will meet with both NYC's Public Design Commission and the Landmarks Preservation Commission. Construction is anticipated to kick off in 2026 and wrap up by 2030.
