South Station Tower Debuts Large-Scale Public Art Installation by Local Artist Allen Chamberland

Hines, the global real estate investment manager, and ArtLifting, an art consulting agency championing artists impacted by disabilities and housing insecurity, have partnered on a large-scale temporary public art installation at South Station Tower. The major mixed-use project, developed by Hines, has unveiled a nearly 6,500 square foot reproduction of Emerald Tree by Boston-based artist, Allen Chamberland; one of the largest public art installations currently in Boston. It is now on display at the building along Atlantic Avenue.

The art installation was conceptualized by ArtLifting, Hines, Pelli Clarke & Partners, and Chamberland. Mere steps from the Rose Kennedy Greenway, the design is meant to immerse passersby in an artistic landscape surrounding the final stages of construction. The installation was approved by the Boston Planning and Development Agency and aligns with Mayor Michelle Wu’s expansive public art initiative to support local artists.

About the project, CEO and Co-Founder of ArtLifting, Liz Powers shares, “We couldn't be more excited about this large-scale project featuring Allen Chamberland's amazing artwork. Allen was one of the first artists we worked with when founding ArtLifting ten years ago, and his talent deserves to be celebrated in such a big way in his home city. Seeing Allen's art reach more people is a dream come true, and we are incredibly proud to partner with Hines and the City of Boston to create a meaningful visual and social impact at South Station Tower.”

The temporary art installation features a monumental reproduction of the artwork Emerald Tree by Allen Chamberland printed on temporary scrim. The original artwork was created by hand using a papercut technique, where the artist meticulously removes portions from a single sheet of paper to create the art. A Boston native, Chamberland used to sell his artwork as a street vendor. His partnership with ArtLifting has allowed him to create a living from his work. The original artwork has been acquired by Hines and is now on display at the South Station Tower Sales Gallery.

About the project, Chamberland shares, "I am beyond excited to have my artwork, Emerald Tree, featured in such a prime location at the new South Station Tower! This piece is a reflection of the inspiration I draw from Boston, the city where I live and whose beauty constantly fuels my creativity. It's going to be amazing to see my artwork at a huge scale in a public space I frequent. It's an incredible honor to be selected for this project and I am thrilled to share my love for our city and its vibrant community through my art."

“We are proud to partner with ArtLifting to showcase the incredible work of Allen Chamberland at South Station Tower,” said Sean Sacks, Senior Managing Director and City Head of Hines’ Boston office. “Our longstanding relationship with ArtLifting underscores our commitment to championing diverse and local artists. This collaboration brings a unique, larger-than-life mural to the building, providing beautiful public art for everyone to enjoy.”

Opening in 2025, South Station Tower, designed by Pelli Clarke & Partners, is a 51-story mixed-use tower situated over Boston’s most connected and active transit hub. The upper 16 floors of the sustainable development will feature residences branded and managed by The Ritz-Carlton, offering unsurpassed panoramic views of the city and Boston Harbor. Residential sales are now underway. The building will also feature 685,000 square feet of office space and an expansive, nearly 1-acre private park 120 feet above the city, among its amenities. With a striking, timeless design, this new icon—rising 690 feet above one of Boston’s most seen and recognized landmarks—will redefine the Boston skyline.

The project also includes the expansion of the existing multi-modal transportation center at South Station, notable for its significant private investment in the city’s transit hub, and the continuation of South Station’s history of being a regional transportation core and destination. This construction is creating an architecturally significant public space at the train station concourse that enhances the image of South Station as a gateway to the city, while increasing the active transportation hub’s capacity by approximately 50 percent and providing more convenient connections to the train and subway. It will also improve the streetscapes with new sidewalks, granite curbs, streetlights, and greenery, further activating the area and resulting in a vibrant and welcoming experience for all.
