Spring 2018 groundbreaking anticipated for approved Newtonville mixed-use development
28 Austin Street, a mixed-income housing development with ground-floor retail that will transform an existing surface parking lot in the heart of Newtonville, is set to break ground in Spring 2018. A settlement has been reached with residents who sued to prevent 28 Austin Street’s development, ending over a year of delays. “With this settlement agreement, a major impediment to a timely construction commencement has been resolved,” said 28 Austin Street developer Scott Oran in a letter to Newton city officials. Terms of the settlement are confidential; the residents have agreed to drop all claims against the developers. The developers are now working with MassHousing to finalize financing for the project. 28 Austin Street was originally approved in December 2015 and will feature 68 mixed-income apartment residences with 5,000 square feet of ground-floor retail; 23 residences at 28 Austin Street will be designated affordable. Completion of 28 Austin Street is expected in 2019.
