St. Petersburg City Council Approves Historic Gas Plant District Project
The St. Petersburg City Council, by a vote of five to three, has given the go ahead for the Historic Gas Plant District which will include a new stadium for the Tampa Bay Rays. The project will go before the Pinellas County Commission on July 30 for final approval. The council voted on five items: A resolution for the 12 agreements that provide the framework necessary to redevelop the current Tropicana Field site, ensuring the continued operations of the Tampa Bay Rays, approximately $6.5 billion of new development, significant job creation and community benefits, and one of the largest economic development projects in the region's history; An ordinance adopting amendments to Intown Redevelopment Plan to increase the Redevelopment Program budget to fund the New Stadium Project and the Historic Gas Plant Redevelopment Infrastructure; An ordinance approving the Development Agreement for the Historic Gas Plant District Redevelopment; Two resolutions to approve the issuance of bonds to finance the project costs relating to A) the New Stadium project and B) the infrastructure required for the Historic Gas Plant District Redevelopment Plan, and confirm the appointment of special legal counsel for related legal services; A resolution acknowledging the selection of Skanksa USA Building Inc. for construction services for the Historic Gas Plant District Redevelopment project, including the new Tampa Bay Rays stadium
The redevelopment, in addition to the new state-of-the-art ballpark for the Tampa Bay Rays major league baseball team, will include a transformational development by the Hines Historic Gas Plant Partnership on the 86-acre site where the team’s current stadium sits. The project for St. Petersburg, Pinellas County and the Tampa Bay region will include nearly 8 million square feet of mixed-use development 4,800 residential units, 1,200 affordable/workforce residential units (on and off-site), 600 senior living units, 1,400,000 square feet of office, medical and commercial space, 750,000 square feet of retail, 750 hotel rooms, 100,000 square feet of entertainment space, including a concert venue to seat up to 4,000, 50,000 square feet of civic space, namely a new home for the Carter G. Woodson African American Museum, 90,000 - 100,000 square feet of conference, ballroom and meeting space, 14 acres of public open space, 14,000 parking spaces.
