Tower Square hotel in hands of new owners

Dinesh Patel of East Longmeadow and his partners closed Thursday on their $10.5 million purchase of the Tower Square Hotel, formerly the Marriott, in the heart of downtown.

The partners plan to buy the rest of Tower Square -- including the parking garage -- within a few weeks, for a sum they do not yet wish to disclose. The parking garage is considered part of the mall and office tower property.

The hotel's sale price became public when papers were filed at the Hampden County Registry of Deeds.

Now, their focus is on beginning planned renovations at the hotel and affiliating it with a new "flag" -- meaning a national hotel brand.

"It's another investment in the city of Springfield," said Patel, who owns the Hampton Inn & Suites hotel in Springfield's South End and is a part owner of the Springfield Thunderbirds minor league hockey team. "We want to continue to develop as a community, and do right by the city and right by the mayor and the people of Springfield."

He said an icon of Springfield like Tower Square belongs in local hands.

"That is why we jumped in," he said. "It's a great spot. You can't beat this corner."
