Vacant Brooklyn Church Building Sells for $72.87M
The Church of St. Michael & St. Edward, located at 108 St Edwards Street in Fort Greene, Brooklyn, has just been sold for $72.87 million. The structure was acquired by Westhab from the Roman Catholic Diocese Of Brooklyn, in an arms-length transaction.
Originally constructed in 1906, the beautiful little church oozes character, but it, unfortunately, won't be around for much longer. Due to deteriorating conditions and collapsing debris inside the structure, it has sat vacant since 2010. In fact, conditions became so hazardous that mass services eventually had to be moved to the basement.
Plans are already underway for the church to be replaced by a new, 11-story development, designed by Aufgang Architects. It will contain 105 apartment units, a cellar level, and 1,274 square feet of community facility space. The building will stand 115 feet tall and total 32,133 square feet. Demolition permits have already been filed for the church, and Brooker Engineering has submitted a Builders Pavement Plan (BPP) for the upcoming project.
