Washington Commanders Potential Stadium Site Update 05/24/22

Washington Commanders Buy Potential Site for New Stadium in Woodbridge

The Washington Commanders NFL franchise has acquired a 200-acre site in Woodbridge, Virginia that could be the future home of a stadium and $3B development. The franchise has acquired the site near Interstate 95 and the Potomac Mills shopping center, for $100M.

The renderings show a hyper-modern stadium featuring a semi-translucent roof and facade that will change colors, a translucent roof that would allow natural light.

The development of and around the stadium could total $3B and feature new team headquarters, and practice facility.

The project also includes other office and multifamily buildings, along with a nearly mile-long walkway of retail with restaurants and bars.

Plans also include a nearly 20,000-person amphitheater.

Commanders said the team is still considering other locations for a future stadium, which could in Maryland, D.C. or elsewhere in Northern Virginia.

The team currently has a lease on FedEx Field in Landover, Maryland until 2026. A Maryland proposal released earlier this year would see the state fund an entertainment district around FedEx Field, however it has not offered economic incentives.

Washington D.C. would like to offer the site of the Robert F. Kennedy Stadium, however the federal government owns the property, and the District is trying to gain control of the property in order to build a mixed-use district there anchored by the new stadium.

Virginia lawmakers have proposed $350M to help finance a new stadium, yet that bill still needs to be approved in the state legislature. Besides the Woodbridge site, an area near the team's current practice facility in Ashburn is also under consideration.
