Inova Hospital Springfield Update 09/19/22

Zoning Application Approved for Springfield Inova Campus

Plans have been approved for a nearly 1 million-square-foot hospital at the intersection of Beulah Street and the Franconia-Springfield Parkway.  Now the application progresses to certify public need from Virginia. After securing planning and permitting, Inova intends to start construction in late 2023. The project includes a 438,800 sq. ft. building located beside Inova’s existing HealthPlex.

Inova previously said that the facility at 6355 Walker Lane would be repurposed after the new hospital opens. The project’s first phase includes a new six-story building with an emergency department and 144 inpatient beds, and a 134,100 sq. ft. outpatient center. A planned second phase would comprise a 183,500 sq. ft., 72-bed hospital expansion and an 82,600 sq. ft. outpatient center. The total footprint could reach up to 985,000 square feet, including the existing 146,000 sq. ft. HealthPlex building.

The plans also call for 1,462 parking spaces as well as a helipad. Inova’s Fairfax hospital has a Level 1 designation and the health system plans to seek a Level 2 designation for its future Alexandria hospital on the Landmark Mall redevelopment, which is anticipated to have more air traffic than this site. The Springfield project would allow Inova to serve patients who live in the Springfield area, who currently tend to travel to the system’s Alexandria, Mount Vernon and Fairfax medical campuses.

Inova started laying the groundwork for this hospital in 2020, expecting the project would take about three to five years to deliver.
