About Conservatory Lab Charter School
Conservatory Lab Charter School, a tuition-free Commonwealth charter school founded in 1999 with the goal of providing inner-city school children a rigorous, music-rich education, has been approved to construct a three-story, 43,500-square-foot school building at 395 Columbia Road in Dorchester. The building would serve as a permanent location for its Elementary and Upper School (approximately 275 students in grades 3-8), currently located nearby in Dorchester.
Common resource spaces at the school would include a courtyard, a centralized dining commons, a gymnasium, a media library, a visual arts studio and a collection of small, medium and large acoustically-tuned ensemble spaces. Shared spaces such as the dining commons, gymnasium, and large ensemble would be located along the building’s ground floor to activate the streetscape and welcome the community. 43 parking spaces and a dedicated drop-off area for buses and cars would be located on site
The proposed 1.27-acre site is located steps from Uphams Corner and the Strand Theatre and is currently improved by single-story, light industrial buildings, a paved parking lot and equipment storage space, which would be demolished.
