Due to configuration of the existing bldg. and the locations of the existing interior exit stairways, 21 of the R-2 dwelling units do not meet the 75 feet max. common path of travel requirements for Group R-1. An alternate method of code compliance is proposed where 60 min rated corridors (as opposed to 30 min rated corridor), smoke detectors (as opposed to smoke alarms) and visual notification appliances are provided in the R-1 dwelling units.
