Community Three Development and Torti Gallas Architects to deliver a new, exciting restoration of the Grimke School that will include a permanent home for the African-American Civil War Museum, cultural uses, daytime commercial activity, and affordable housing. 'Built in 1887, Grimke School was renamed in 1934 in honor of Archibald Grimke, an American lawyer, journalist, diplomat, and President of the NAACP of Washington, DC. Today, Grimke School continues this legacy, housing approximately 65,000 square feet of cultural space, arts uses, and loft-style office, including the new permanent home of the African American Civil War Museum and the international headquarters of the award winning architectural firm, Torti Gallas + Partners.
