About UMass Lowell West Campus

255 Princeton St, North Chelmsford, MA

UMass Lowell's 34-acre former West Campus, located at 255 Princeton St., has been vacant for several years. With the university deciding the property has no place in its master plan and seeking special legislation to dispose of it.

At the recommendation of Town Manager Paul Cohen, the Board of Selectmen recently decided to form a UMass Lowell West Campus Planning Committee that will explore the future use of the parcel through a community visioning and planning process aided by town engineering and community development staff.

In February 2017, Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker signed off on the bond bill with the demolition date yet to be determined. At the same time, Chelmsford Town Manager Paul Cohen established the West Campus Planning Committee, with the goal of listing ways the property could be utilized when it comes to the point of acquisition from the college. The talks are still ongoing (Smith).

n August 2018, UMass Lowell had been cleared by the state Legislature and  Governor Baker to sell the property in Chelmsford. West Campus will head to auction this spring (2019), but the college has yet to state a price.
