23-Story Tower Project to Save Historic Church in Jersey City

An updated design has been revealed for a 23-story tower project, set to rise at 619 Grove Street in Jersey City. The project will spare 3-historic structures from the wrecking ball and integrate them into the new development.

Developed by , the project site is currently home to the historic St. Lucy’s Catholic Church, which was originally built in 1884, as well as the former parish rectory and school building. Despite none of these structures having any type of landmark status, they will not be torn down, but rather spared and heavily modified to form the base of the new tower.

Designed by Michael Graves Architecture & Design, with MVMK listed as the architect of record, the building will offer rental apartments, offered in studio and one to three-bedroom configurations. Interiors are to be envisioned by Premier, and approximately 13 units will be set aside for affordable housing programs.

Tenant amenities are to include an outdoor terrace, and an enclosed, multi-story parking garage, with enough room for vehicles. Plans also call for square feet of retail space, located on the ground floor.

The new development will also make use of the church's bell tower by cleverly integrating it into an outdoor lounge area and making its interior accessible to residents.

Set to be constructed by general contractor, , 619 Grove Street will stand  feet tall and total square feet altogether. The project is expected to break ground in 2024, with work ultimately concluding in 2026.
