Ami Shah to Serve as HOK’s Firmwide Health Education Practice Leader

A veteran architect and lab planner, Shah has extensive experience assisting universities develop cutting-edge spaces for educating and training doctors, nurses and allied health professionals.

In her 16 years at HOK, Ami Shah, AIA, LEED AP, has played a pivotal role on major health education projects including the University at Buffalo Jacobs School of MedicineUniversity of South Florida’s Morsani College of Medicine and the IU Health Bloomington Health Sciences Building at the Regional Academic Health Center.

In her new position, Shah will advise on projects across HOK and lead teams focused on designing new and innovative solutions for the rapidly evolving field of health education.

“Health education is such an exciting field because of its hands-on learning and speed at which new medical knowledge is entering the curriculum,” said Shah. “The challenge is how do you create spaces that can adapt to these changes? HOK has been at the leading edge of this discussion with innovations such as multi-modal learning spaces and hyper-flexible experiential sandbox environments. I look forward to continuing to collaborate with our clients on advances that are flexible, welcoming, inclusive and healthy.”

A recognized thought leader, Shah has presented and written on topics such as future-proofing medical schoolsdeveloping next-generation health education spaces and designing inclusive labs. Based in HOK’s Atlanta studio, she is a member of HOK’s Diversity Advisory Council and has collaborated with team members on HOK’s firmwide employee opportunity surveys and the firm’s Diversity x Design scholarships for BIPOC and minority design students.
