CARVART Retail Kiosks Enhance DC Convention Center Streetscape

At the Walter E. Washington Convention Center, Events DC has provided the canvas for a unique collaboration of expert engineers and craftsman to showcase an impressive and flexible use of retail space to enhance the exposure and attraction to the convention center amenities. The kiosks were engineered, manufactured, and installed by CARVART.

At the entry to each kiosk space, CARVART glassSTACKWALL storefront systems fully operate and open to the street-facing spaces. As an alternative to traditional fixed storefronts, glassSTACKWALL allows all glass panels to slide and collect to the side providing flexibility and openness. Designed for access and endless use, heavy-duty and fully automated door actuators function with the push of a button allowing smooth and seamless access into the spaces. Not only are these movable walls ideal for sealing off the harsh elements but they also offer a very high level of acoustic performance.

Around each glassSTACKWALL storefront opening is a beautiful 3-sided CARVART glassPORTAL system that highlights custom concealed hardware along with beautiful red laminated glass. With deep frameless fins protruding from the building’s façade, the glassPORTAL accentuates and encompasses the spaces, bringing focus and attention to retail spaces and the overall building.  Oversized and extremely tall, the portals speak not only of challenging engineering feats, but the elegance and refinement that thoughtful design can offer.

Wrapping the interior and exterior surfaces of the kiosks are CARVART metalWALLCLAD panel systems. These metal panels offer beautiful and durable surfaces cohesive with the space and property. Incorporating concealed access doors, complex corner conditions and thoughtful trim to other surfaces, CARVART metalWALLCLAD offers a solution to heavy traffic and commercial abuse that will withstand time and enhance durability.

At the back of each kiosk is a CARVART full-height glass curtain wall façade. This structure looks from above and into the convention center space. The oversized glassXL used for these curtainwalls are one full piece from top to bottom of the structure. Not only enclosing the retail spaces but concealing structural and mechanical areas above and below the finished spaces. Whether looking up from floor level or viewing from the mezzanine areas, the natural daylight shining through CARVART custom red structural glass reads like a suspended jewel breaking through the exterior shell of the convention center. Just like the various areas of metalWALLCLAD, the extensive custom red glass surfaces balance and spread the cohesiveness of intention and functional design.
