Demolition Preparations Underway at RFK Stadium

Events D.C. announced that the demolition of “major structural components” of RFK Stadium will be completed by the end of 2023, and that work is underway on the abatement of hazardous materials at the 61-year-old stadium structure and that should take several months.

Back in 2020, the agency awarded a $14.2 million contract to Providence, Rhode Island's Gilbane Building Co. to demolish the stadium, but later rescinded the contract in the face of protests from losing bidders on the project. Events D.C. restarted the process in December 2020 and D.C.'s Smoot Construction was awarded the new contract, Events D.C. confirmed Thursday.

RFK Stadium and its adjacent acreage is the subject of a lot of economic plans for the District, whether it be new housing, new recreation or a new home for the Washington Commanders. Complicating those plans is the fact that the land is only leased by the District; it is owned by the federal government. Legislative efforts are underway to bring the land into the D.C.’s control, but there’s been little updates from those efforts.
