Major Hospital Expansion Tops Out on Long Island
General contractor, , has topped out the superstructure of a 6-story expansion project at Good Samaritan University Hospital in West Islip, New York (Long Island).
Developed by Catholic Health, and known as the "Patient Care Pavilion", this major addition will add a new, 300,000 square-foot section to the existing, 450,000 square-foot hospital building.
The project broke ground back in May of last year, with the foundation poured this past fall and structural ironwork kicking off more recently in December.
The hybrid superstructure consists of a 3-story, steel podium, topped by another 3 stories of rebar-reinforced concrete. Fireproofing is also underway, and many of the exposed steel I-beams have now been coated with fire-resistant spray foam.
The Patient Care Pavilion will feature a 75-bay emergency department, 16 tech-enabled operating rooms, and 36 patient rooms. The design will also provide flexibility for future renovations and additional floors, which could increase the number of patient rooms to 120.
In addition to medical and care facilities, the pavilion will feature a beautiful lobby with a reception desk and seating, as well as a courtyard garden, a café, and a gift store.
While the pavilion won't increase the hospital’s overall bed count, it will position patients closer to key hospital services, while providing them with more private spaces and larger clinical areas. The entire project is set to cost a little over $500 million, and work is expected to wrap up by early 2025.
