Wakefield Village Update 08/09/21

Massive 1,200 Unit Development Proposed for Wakefield

The Department of City Planning has received an ambitious proposal for a mixed-use development in the Bronx called Wakefield Village. The aptly-named project would bring 1,262 affordable housing units to the Wakefield neighborhood at the very top of the borough. The master plan, designed by Newman Architects, depicts 6 buildings on the 4.65-acre site. Combined, they would contain 1,075,684 sqft of residential space.

In addition to housing units, Wakefield Village will have ample room for retail space, and community facilities.

The triangle-shaped piece of land, which currently plays host to an MTA parking lot, will be combined and rezoned with two neighboring lots in order to create the development site.

Wakefield Village will be a transit-oriented development, and as such, it will sit diagonally from the Wakefield Metro-North station. Bearing in mind that the neighborhood is right at the edge of city limits, this convenient transit access will provide residents with a quick commute to Manhattan's Grand Central Terminal.

The project's developer is not immediately clear, but Newman Architects' website may provide us a clue in stating that their client is Webster Leasing LLC. The architectural firm also says the development is estimated to complete in 2027.
