National Geographic Wins Approval for Rooftop Restaurant as Part of Hotel Conversion

The D.C. Zoning Board has approved The National Geographic Society's plans to construct a restaurant in a penthouse at their property at 1145 17th Street NW.  The restaurant is part of plans to convert a portion of the building into a hotel. The National Geographic Society headquarters site is designated as an individual historic landmark, and the building, designed by noted architect Edward Durell Stone, is a contributing structure to the landmark. The proposed hotel will contain approximately 160 rooms on the upper floors, and the ground floor will include the lobby, two distinct gallery spaces, and part of a museum.
