National Park Service Selects Consigli to Transform Visitor Experience at Lincoln Memorial

Consigli Construction Co., Inc. has announced that it has been selected by the National Park Service to complete historic rehabilitation work to the Lincoln Memorial, including the construction of an immersive museum beneath the memorial and critical upgrades and improvements to accessibility and deliver a new, state-of-the-art visitor experience.

“The Lincoln Memorial represents a transformative moment in our Nation’s history, and this work will allow visitors to experience its significance for generations to come,” said Matthew Consigli, President of Consigli Construction Co., Inc. “Our Mid-Atlantic team is ready to undertake this critically important project, and we look forward to working collaboratively with the National Park Service and our partners to deliver this once-in-a-lifetime renovation.”

The project will create 15,000 square feet of exhibit space that will provide a look at the Lincoln Memorial’s foundations in a cavernous area known as the undercroft. New museum exhibits and multi-media presentations will highlight the construction history of the memorial and discuss how it has become the nation’s foremost backdrop for civil rights demonstrations. The project also includes new restrooms, a larger bookstore and a refurbished elevator. Consigli will also install new mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and security systems.

“As a leader in historic preservation and rehabilitation projects and having already undertaken key D.C. projects with the National Park Service such as the Meridian Hill Park Phase 5 and 6 and the Netherlands Carillon rehabilitation, Consigli is well-equipped to deliver upgrades and improvements to this iconic monument,” said Phil Brault, Director of Operations of the Washington, D.C. Office and Mid-Atlantic Project Executive. “We are committed to successfully completing this project through a thoughtful approach that will ensure continued, uninterrupted access to this invaluable monument.”

The Lincoln Memorial has served as a symbolic backdrop for national celebrations and is the nation’s pre-eminent stage for rallies and civil rights demonstrations. Consigli is well known for its historic preservation work in the Mid-Atlantic market and has previously worked with partners such as the Smithsonian Institution, Architect of the Capitol and the National Park Service.

Access to the Lincoln Memorial will remain open to the public during construction, which is expected to begin in March and complete in 2026.
