St. Mary's Center Planning Redevelopment of 2+ Acre Dorchester Campus
St. Mary’s Center currently operates an Adult Family Shelter, a Young Parenting Living Program, Transitional Housing, and Education and Employment support at its’ 2.4-acre campus, located at 90 Cushing Ave. in Dorchester. The northern portion of the site now houses a literally crumbling parking garage as well as an existing North building with a mix of housing for 12 families in St. Mary's Adult Family Shelter program as well as various other services. Plans for the development call for a new North Building that will feature 71 affordable residential units with amenity spaces on the ground floor. The New North Building will strive to be LEED Gold Certifiable and Passive House Certified.
The East & Main buildings will be completely renovated the buildings, transforming the current space from a retrofitted hospital to a de-densified, dignified living space designed to adequately meet the needs of mothers and children. The proposed floor plans reflect a 2-4-bedroom open- pod apartment style design, creating habitable, family-oriented settings that meet the needs of the average size of a family experiencing homelessness (3.4 people).
