Giant replaced the former 18,500 sq. ft. store (closed in April 2012) to a modern 56,000 sq. ft. grocery store (November 2014 opening), located at Wisconsin Avenue and Newark Street. The main entrance will be restored, with large windows and doors similar to those in the original 1953 design. The overall development will include the parcel south of Newark Street (former Giant location) and the parcel north of Newark Street. On the southern parcel the existing Giant will be demolished and a new 56,000 sq. ft. store was built along with 40,199 sq. ft. of small retail stores (including 12,947 sq. ft. of second floor shops). There is also be 21 residential units (13 loft apartments on Newark Street and eight townhomes on Idaho Ave averaging 2,209 SF per unit). On the northern site there is an additional 30,827 sq. ft. of retail space and 124 residential units.
