Hells Kitchen Landmark in Mayoral Review
Built in 1881, The Windermere in Manhattan's Hells Kitchen neighborhood is one of New York City's first apartment buildings. Designated a NYC Landmark in 2005, the building itself is going nowhere, however, a complete renovation may be just around the corner. An application by developer, Windermere Properties LLC, is requesting a special permit to modify bulk and use regulations. This would facilitate a complete renovation and conversion of the historic building. It would contain a hotel, residential units, and retail space. Thus far the renovation and change of use have been approved by the Community Board, the Borough President, the City Planning Commission, and the City Council. The application is now being reviewed by the Mayor, who will ultimately decide within five days if the proposal gets the green light.
