Richard Burck Associates, Inc. is a landscape architecture studio composed of seven full-time design professionals. During the past twenty- five years, the office has conceived and implemented a broad range of projects, taking on complex program and coordination issues related to challenging and significant sites. The office’s work ranges from urban and mixed-use to institutional and civic projects.
Recent and on-going projects for major universities, museums, and libraries have highlighted the dilemmas paramount to many institutions today. While restricted by conservative construction budgets, many institutions are challenged by topographic and accessibility constraints, sustainability goals and a complexity of overlapping program demands.
All of RBA’s work begins with a detailed and creative assessment of the project area and surrounding context. Layered onto these static conditions, they analyze a site’s changing qualities, such as sun angle, seasons, wind, stormwater patterns, plant associations, social uses, and site history. They are rigorous in their research of a project’s context as those discoveries often lead directly to design proposals. With this understanding of the site, RBA develops clear design strategies to create grounded, functional, and meaningful public and private spaces, regardless of project complexity and scale. Their design solutions not only emphasize the inherent qualities of site, but often create spatial drama that adds to the generation of special, memorable, and enduring places.
RBA has demonstrated a commitment to sustainable design, employing several LEED®-accredited professionals and teaming up with other consultants to create high-performance green projects. They are on the forefront of emerging green roof technology and the design of gravity-based stormwater harvesting systems for passive irrigation in urban environments.
