Tangerine Plaza Update 07/19/22

City of St. Petersburg Re-Opens Tangerine Plaza Redevelopment

New redevelopment proposals are being sought for Tangerine Plaza, a shopping center in the Midtown section of St. Petersburg.  The center has been without a large grocer since the Walmart Neighborhood Market moved out in 2017.  At that time the City of St. Petersburg acquired the property with the intent of a redevelopment project with a combination of retail and affordable housing.  The other large grocery tenant, Sweetbay, closed in 2013.

The city initially opened the redevelopment process in 2018.  Proposals were submitted and the city had begun negotiations with prospective developer Sugar Hill Group LLC to open a grocery store along with affordable housing and other retail space.  Sugar Hill had submitted a new proposal that will add more emphasis to the residential element and reduced the retail space from 40,000 to 10,000 square feet.  Sugar Hill’s latest proposal calls for 115 affordable housing units. Now, the city is reopening the bidding process to other developers.

The city set a deadline of 10:00 a.m. on August 17 for submission proposals from other developers.
