MTA Issues RFP for Electric Bus Depot in the Bronx

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has issued an RFP for a new electric bus facility in the Bronx's Baychester neighborhood. It would be built on an unused, 550,000 square foot parcel next to the MTA's existing Gun Hill Road Depot, serving as a supplement to the current facility.

The RFP provides an opportunity to build up to one million square feet of industrial development, so long as the new bus facility is incorporated into the plans. According to Mass Transit Magazine, "The selected developer will fund the construction of the MTA facility and pay substantial ground rent towards MTA capital needs, supported by revenue that will be generated by the redevelopment of the under-utilized land".

A first of its kind in the Bronx, the depot would have enough room to house and recharge up to 225 electric buses. The project will significantly help the MTA reach its ultimate goal of operating a zero-emissions bus fleet by 2040.
