19 new artist live/work units inhabit the former “dog pound” site situated at 2013 Second Street in Berkeley, California. Taking a clue from its industrial setting, the ground level allows views through the mechanical parking to courtyard beyond. A perforated screen/garage entry depicts the street grid with metal flat bar and rod and marks the site, the nearby Amtrak railroad, present and historic Bay shoreline, and I-80 Freeway. Neighborhood character is also expressed in the exposed wood beams and a pattern of varied corrugated metal. An array of vibrant and colorful polycarbonate panels above, hint at the imagination of the artist residents creating inside.
