[Please identify by specific citation to Title 12 of the DCMR or to the International Codes as applicable]. IBC ?403.5.1 Remoteness of interior exit stairways. Required interior exit stairways shall be separated by a distance not less than 30 feet (9144 mm) or not less than one-fourth of the length of the maximum overall diagonal dimension of the building or area to be served, whichever is less. The distance shall be measured in a straight line between the nearest points of the enclosure surrounding the interior exit stairways. In buildings with three or more interior exit stairways, no fewer than two of the interior exit stairways shall comply with this section. Interlocking or scissor stairways shall be counted as one interior exit stairway. 1) Are there specific individual reasons that make the application of the strict letter of the Construction Codes impractical? YES Yes. The building was originally designed under the 2013DCCC which did not have this requirement. Additionally, the lot is narrow and long, limiting the efficient floor plans and necessitating placing the stair enclosures fairly close together. 2) Is the requested modification is in compliance with the intent and purpose of the Construction Codes? YES The intent of the District of Columbia Building is explicitly stated in DCMR 12A ?101.2.4 as: The purpose of the Building Code is to establish the minimum requirements to provide a reasonable level of safety, public health, and general welfare through structural strength, means of egress facilities, stability, sanitation, adequate light and ventilation, energy conservation, accessibility, sustainability, and safety to life and property from fire and other hazards attributed to the built environment, and to provide a reasonable level of safety to fire fighters and emergency responders during emergency preparations. The design complies with the intent and purpose of the 2013 DCCC as the 2013DCCC is the code the building was originally designed under. 3) Does the requested modification lessen health, accessibility, life and fire safety, or structural requirements? NO
