About The Thompson Center Redevelopment Project

The Thompson Center, which originally opened in 1985 as the State of Illinois Center, will undergo renovation that will feature a 17-story internal atrium, new facade, and fully electric sustainable systems. A new triple-pane glass exterior will also improve the thermal performance of the building by requiring less energy for heating and cooling.  Covered terraces along three levels of the southeast perimeter will also bring new green spaces. The renovations were designed by Jahn, the building's original architectural firm. Google plans to purchase the building after renovations are complete and move its offices there in 2026.
