The flooding is caused by sediment aggrading in the channel of Mouse Creek and causing flows to avulse towards a small culvert just east of the bridge. Sediment has accumulated at the inlet and outlet of the culvert and is blocking flows. Phase I work included excavating the stream channel upstream of the roadway; this area was not in a flood hazard area. Phase 2 proposes to excavate sediment from the channel downstream of the roadway. This area is within the 100-year floodplain and 500-year floodplain of the Sauk River; it is not within a floodway. Approximately 494 cubic yards of sediment will be removed; 64 cubic yards from a small U.S. Forest Service property immediately adjacent to the roadway, and 430 cubic yards from the Turner property. Permit Details: EPERMIT Description of Work: Phase 2 of the Mouse Creek Drainage Improvement Project proposes to re-establish flow in the stream by excavating approximately 545 feet of the historic channel. Approximately 70 linear feet of the channel will be on USFS land immediately adjacent to the north side of the roadway, and the remainder will be on private property. The primary purpose of the project is to reduce flooding that overtops Sauk Prairie Road during times of high precipitation and associated runoff. Flood reduction will be achieved by restoring the channel of Mouse Creek. The stream transports a large load of sediment. It historically deposited its sediment load in an upstream area within an alluvial fan at the base of the steep slopes south of Sauk Prairie Road. After a berm was installed on the right bank of Mouse Creek preventing deposition of the sediment upstream, the sediment load was transported down to the roadway where it aggraded. This aggradation eventually caused an avulsion to the northeast towards an 18-inch overflow culvert. The Phase 1 work in 2019 included removing the upstream berm and excavating the channel of Mouse Creek upstream of Sauk Prairie Road.
