Society for Islamic Brotherhood Proposes Mixed-Use Development in Roxbury
The Society for Islamic Brotherhood has submitted plans for a mixed-use project to replace an existing structure and surface parking lot along Shawmut Ave. in Roxubry. The new development, “New Madinah, would include over 14,000 sf of new cultural, commercial, and services space, along with 38 new affordable housing units. The ground floor is generally dedicated to public, commercial, and cultural uses; including a multi-purpose event space, cultural cafe and bookstore, and access to the mosque and educational spaces above.
“The New Madinah,” takes its name from the old city of Madinah; one of the holiest cities in Islam. As an economic, cultural, and residential center, the city is and was regarded as a sort of social crossroads; encouraging the exchange of ideas, commerce, and people with streets of dwellings overlooking commercial bazaars and markets. The New Madinah project aims to continue that spirit.
