City of St. Petersburg and Developers Meet to Discuss Gas Plant District Proposals
Prospective developers met with City of St. Petersburg officials to discuss plans for the Historic Gas Plant District prior to proposals being submitted. City officials answered questions and went over the city’s priorities for the project such as the need for affordable housing and hiring minority contractors. In total, 88 people attended the meeting, 37 in person and 51 via Zoom. Spanning 86 acres nestled in the middle of St. Pete, with one of the most vibrant and walkable communities in the nation, the Historic Gas Plant District (formally known as the Tropicana Field site) represents an opportunity unlike any other in the Southeast. The new Request for Proposal process will ensure intentional equity, vibrancy and economic vitality for years to come. The City of St. Petersburg received proposals from two developers at the end of 2021. In June, St. Petersburg Mayor Ken Welch began the new Request for Proposal process. The site is currently occupied by Tropicana Field, home of the Tampa Bay Rays major league baseball team. The Rays’ lease with the city expires in 2027. Proposals for re-development must include plans with a new baseball stadium and call for residential units, to include affordable housing, office space, retail space and green space. New proposals are due by 10 a.m. on Nov. 18.
