550 Tenth Avenue Update 09/18/23

Facade Work Stalls for 47-Story Tower in Hells Kitchen

As the building continues to rise, general contractor, , has already installed a good portion of the distinct, red facade, at 550 Tenth Avenue; a 47-story skyscraper, going up in Manhattan's Hells Kitchen neighborhood.

However, while the development is really starting to take shape, the unfinished superstructure is currently lacking an important piece of equipment... a functioning tower crane. Yes, this is the same project that made news headlines back in July, when its tower crane caught fire and collapsed onto the street below. Miraculously there were no fatalities as a result of that incident, but the crane's boom and it's 16-ton load both came crashing down, striking a luxury apartment building across the street in the process. As you can see, what's left of the damaged crane is still attached to the building, and this has completely halted the facade installation process for the time being.

Jointly developed by Gotham Organization and Goldman Sachs, 550 Tenth Avenue is set to contain rental apartments, with approximately 137 units reserved for affordable housing.

Tenant amenities are to include a lounge area, a roof deck, a fitness center, and a co-working space. Plans also call for square feet of ground-floor retail space, and square feet of office space for the non-profit homeless services organization, Covenant House.

Designed by , 550 Tenth Avenue will stand feet tall and total square feet altogether.

The  square foot project site spans the width of a city block and sits between the streets of West 40th and West 41st. Construction is anticipated to finish by June of 2025, although the aforementioned crane collapse may cause delays that push the build schedule further back.
