Lakewood Tower Renovation Underway
Crews are making progress at 5631 Tidewater Drive in Norfolk, VA. Lakewood Tower apartments are under renovation since their building was deemed "unfit for habitation" in May 2021 by the city. The City of Norfolk cited the building for a code violation because the only two elevators in the building were not working and no one could live on the top floors which eventually led to the redevelopment project. The project involves interior and exterior demolition and abatement in support of the renovation of the 13-story (145,000 SF) apartment building. Included in the scope was the rigging and removal of 192 concrete balcony rails, each weighing over a ton. The new structure will feature 200 apartment units as well as a new roof, windows, doors, cabinets, appliances, flooring, paint, fixtures, hardware, handrails and elevator modernization. Construction is expected to be completed by December 2022.
