New Affordable Housing and Sitar Arts Center Expansion Breaks Ground

On Wednesday, November 2nd, Mayor Muriel Bowser broke ground on 1724 Kalorama Road NW, a 22,000-square-foot vacant commercial building that will be redeveloped into a five-story mixed-use building offering affordable multi-family housing and valuable community services. The development will contain 25 units on completion, and is being developed concurrently with a nearby property at 1460 Euclid St NW which will also contain 25 units. Once completed, two-thirds of the 25 units at the 1724 Kalorama Road development will be two- and three-bedroom units, addressing a citywide need for family-size apartments. Two-thirds of the units will also be dedicated to families earning at or below 30% of the area median income – the income level of families who are most rent burdened in the District. In addition, the approximately 6,000-square-foot ground floor will allow the Sitar Arts Center to expand their summer youth arts program and digital media program for young adults.

The site was acquired in 2018 by Jubilee Housing and the Sitar Arts Center, and several DC agencies under Mayor Bowser’s Administration have come together with private partners in the years since to see this project through. The DC Government has contributed over $16 million in Housing Production Trust Funds along with other funding. The project, referred to as EucKal because of the sister properties on Kalorama Road and Euclid Street, will provide an additional 50-units towards the goal to create 12,000 net new units of affordable housing by 2025.
