West End Alexandria Update 06/20/22

Renderings Revealed for Alexandria's West End Redevelopment

Renderings have been revealed by Foulger-Pratt and Inova on the approved redevelopment of the 51-acre site for residential, retail and hospital use.

Block I, on the east of the site and adjacent to the existing parking garage, will host a 7-story apartment building with 390 units.

At a meeting late last week, the developers presented the images of proposed buildings in blocks E, G, I, and K (below).

Block K sits at the center of the site, and will contain a rectangular 8 story apartment building with 339 residences and 26,500 square feet of retail.

The design aims to keep the building’s streetscapes as pedestrian friendly as possible, allowing for more green space to occupy the site.

By creating a built-in parking garage with an internalized loading and service area, the 322 parking spot garage will have a modest footprint compared with similar buildings.

The facade features a refreshing mix of materials, revealing a proportionate and unobtrusive massing.

The design will feature a mix of facades including masonry on the first level, fiber-cement, and metal panels and brick with beige pre-cast panels on the medical building.

The plans promise to transform the unoccupied, enclosed mall site into a walkable urban village.

Blocks E and G sit to the south of the existing parking garage and will front the central plaza on the site.

These blocks will feature two apartment buildings with a total of 390 units and 77,000 square feet of retail.

A bridge will connect one of the apartment buildings to other buildings.

It will also include a medical office building with 100,000 square feet of leasable space.

Inova, the leading nonprofit health care provider in Northern Virginia, will invest $1 billion to create a new medical campus, anchored by the relocation and expansion of its Alexandria Hospital and more than 2,000 health care workers.
