Sarasota Apartment Community Facing Legal Challenge
Aventon Sarasota, a proposed 13-building for project to feature 372 residential units, is facing a legal battle. The project was approved by the Sarasota City Commission; however the ruling is being challenged in court. The site is adjacent to Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport and the airport is objecting to the project. The airport charges that the development violates an agreement with the city that prohibits residential development beneath the 65 decibel day-night average sound level contour. The developer’s representative stated that the site was zoned for multifamily prior to being annexed by the city in 2006 and predates the agreement which came in 2018, therefore the use cannot be challenged by the airport. The legal status of the project is not expected to be resolved until sometime in the spring 2023.
